so, this is my text about learning in whatsapp group

WAG: a Good Decision?

E-learning. Everyone around the world suddenly use e-learning and stay at home in order to save themselves from COVID-19. WhatsApp Group (WAG) is one of application which is almost used by all lectures. WhatsApp Group is a place where every student do interaction with the lecture without seeing each other directly. But, learning in WhatsApp Group is not good decision to do e-learning because it has drawbacks which is faced by the students and teachers. There are three problems which is faced by the students and teachers such as: message flooding, use inappropriate language and strain of eye.

The first one is WhatsApp Group (WAG) would be annoying because of message flooding. Bouhnik.D, and Deshen in Journal of Information Technology Education: Research in 2014 claims “Some teachers reported being swamped by too many messages, in a way that burdened and annoyed them, especially if they have more than one group or groups that are bigger than 15 students.” In addition, Gon and Alka in 2017 said “Since the group comprised of 40 students in the present study, it could have led to message flooding…” It means that many teachers and students are extremely annoyed because of there are non-stop beeps from their phones. Because of this, it will take their focus away from other important things, like understanding the essence of the materials that has been given from their teachers. Besides WAG can cause them annoyed because of too many messages come to their phones, it also can make students use inappropriate language.

The next one is students will use unsuitable language when they discuss in WAG. Bouhnik.D, and Deshen in Journal of Information Technology Education: Research in 2014 stated that since students tend to use less language—frequently slang—even when the subject at hand in academic, teachers can feel challenged by their students’ manner of expression. However, challenges such as the demand for constant availability, foul language and behavior may cause teachers to feel uncomfortable (Mulkawal et.al, 2020). So, e-learning by using WAG is not good because of lack of manners for some students who send message by using unsuitable language which causes teachers feel uncomfortable especially when explaining the material. Not only inappropriate languages, but also make them cause strain of eye.

The last one is strain of eye. According to Gon and Rakewar in MVP Journal of Medical Sciences in 2017, many of the students had smart phone with small screens (less than 5 inches (12.7 cm)) and many of them wear spectacles which may be the reason for eye strain after continuous staring towards mobile screen. When students and teachers are going to have a class in WAG from the morning until the evening and it happens every day. It will cause them to face eye strains, because they always look on their smartphone continuously. As a result, many students and teachers will get eye strain.

Some people may argue that WhatsApp Group (WAG) can increased interaction between students and teachers. They claim that is because in WhatsApp many students can interact with the teachers by sending the message directly and instantly. But, it can lead to flooding messages because all of the students send message to the teacher at the same time. If this happens, it will make the students and also the teachers annoyed because of non-stop notification from their phone and it makes students not focus on studying.

All in all, based on researcher’s findings, it seems that WhatsApp Group is not a good place to learning online. Teachers should consider that WAG is not an effective place to learning online. WhatsApp Group (WAG) is not a good choice to applying learning online because of overflow messages, it also makes the students choose an informal language like slang and cause teachers and students strain of eye. In short, teachers should choose the effective and efficient application for e-learning that can make learning process become smoothly without any obstacles.
