Is trying to prove something exists via pure reason fallacious?

As long as one accepts reason as an axiom, then I would say no. For example, I can demonstration "beyond reasonable doubt" (i.e., using reason) that the pen on my desk exists. Of course, a philosopher can question everything, including the idea that we don't even exist :)
