Worse off?

I'm sure this situation happens to everyone, but I was interested if it is flawed reasoning. My favorite kind of argument is when someone will mention that they are sad or depressed, and instead of comforting that person, everyone takes the conversation into a debate on who has the worst life. Similarly, when someone mentions the amount of pain they're in, everyone will debate on who is in the most pain or whose circumstances are most painful. The conversation quickly turns from an observation of someone's physical or mental health to essentially discounting the first person's statement simply because "there are others who are worse off than you."

Is this flawed logic or reasoning?
